Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of thi s study was to i nvesti gate the physi cal functi on and health behavior in Korean frail elderly.

Methods: The sample consisted of 81 frail elderly aged 65 or over. The questionnaire used to assess physical function and health behaviors included questions on sociodemographics and health-related characteristics of the participant. Data were analyzed by SPSS win 17.0 programe.

Results: The average study participants¡¯ age was 78.5 years. The mean for chronic diseases in our participants was 3.09. The participants¡¯s independence for ADL was 53.1% and in IADL were 12.3%. The lowest ADL score was for ¡®bathing¡¯ and within IADL ¡®using public transportation¡¯ scored the lowest. The mean score for health behavior was 87.93. In subscale, highest score was identified with social category, while the lowest scores were spiritual category. Age, living and economic status were significantly associated with physical function. Gender, education and perceived health status were significantly associated with health behavior. There was a significant correlation between IADL and the subscale
social category.

Conclusion: It is suggested that Korean frail elderly participants have low levels of physical function and health behavior. To promote the health status and physical function, programs should be tailored to this population¡¯s sociodemographic characteristics, level of physical function and health behavior.
